Title: Play The King’s Indian: A Complete Repertoire for Black in this most Dynamic of Openings

Author: Gallagher, Joe

Publisher: Everyman Chess

Genre: Opening

Level: intermediate, advanced

The book Contains a full repertoire for black after 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 g6. The book is written in the “complete games” method, rather than the “variation tree” method. The book contains a good index of variations in the end.

What is it good for? The book is suitable for those who already have some basic knowledge of the King’s Indian Defense and want to use the defense as part of their competitive repertoire. Also good for those who already play the opening.

The Good Things:

  • Gallagher is THE writer on King’s Indian today. He is a grandmaster who really plays the opening and gives you his own games, among others.
  • The explanations on the historical developments of ideas in this complex opening give the reader a wide perspective and a deeper understanding than the usual opening repertoire book.
  • The games are wonderful
  • The book is fun to read, because Gallagher uses a warm friendly tone.

The Bad Things:

  • The size of the letters is smaller than the standard. It goes hard on my eyes after sometime.

Quote: “Fritz Likes White here but I don’t really care what it says; give me Black’s center and kingside attacking chances any day.”

The Bottom Line: The best book in the market for ambitious King’s Indian Defense players.
